Fans may be confused about this venture, as they’re used to seeing Belushi as the typical ‘everyman’ father on According to Jim. But Belushi’s foray into cannabis growing is actually a heart-wrenching story.

Belushi’s brother, John, passed away in 1982, having overdosed on cocaine and heroin. Belushi, devastated by his brother’s passing, turned to cannabis farming after realizing the potential it has to help people turn away from more harmful substances. In fact, Belushi recently tweeted that if his brother had turned to pot, “he’d still be here today.”

“That is why I became a cannabis farmer,” he continued. “To spread this medicine to people who need it. No family should have to go through the trauma of losing a loved one to opioids.”

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Belushi recalls a memorable visit to a friend’s place on the Rogue River.

“I went skinny-dipping in that river,” Belushi told the Hollywood Reporter. “I came outgoing, ‘You know what? I think we should look for a place around here.'”

He did purchase a place there, three years later: a 15-acre property in Eagle Point that he would go on to build a rustic cottage on.

When Belushi’s neighbor passed away in 2014, Belushi purchased the property that was once his – 80 acres of prime farmland. Belushi explained that this property was quickly identified as a perfect spot for growing cannabis:

“There’s a line between Napa and about 20 miles above me that’s a parallel […] That parallel just has the perfect sun, soil, temperatures, and water.”

Since then, the property has brought plenty of joy to Belushi and his family’s lives. He once wrote that the property was created “as a gateway to healing,” adding:

“This land, this river, and its cannabis ground me and have opened my heart to even more compassion and empathy to people struggling in this world. Whether it’s an opiate addict, a veteran with PTSD, a grandmother who is suffering from cancer, nine to fivers who suffer from headaches, sleepless nights, anxiety or pain, or a mother and a father who traumatically suffer through their child’s seizures, one after another.”

Growing Belushi airs Wednesdays on the Discovery Channel, and will feature guest appearances by Dan Aykroyd, Judy Belushi, and the Blues Brothers. You can watch the first episode here.
