Botched Cannabis Heist Leads to 14-Year Prison Sentence

Disgruntled Worker Fails to Pull Off Grand Theft Auto Style Robbery

One disgruntled warehouse worker found that sometimes, revenge bites you back in the butt. His first mistake? Teaming up with a crooked cop to pull off a slimy robbery you’d expect to see in a Grand Theft Auto mission. Here’s what happened:

Christoper Myung Kim, 30, had worked at a cannabis warehouse in downtown Los Angeles. At the time, Cannabis warehouses had just begun to pop up in California since the state passed laws that approved of using marijuana for recreational purposes in 2016. Tensions were high at the warehouse Kim worked in – he quit after a dispute with the owner left him “bitterly disgruntled,” according to court documents.

Kim retaliated by working with Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) Deputy, Marc Antrim, 42, to pull off a risky scheme. The plan? Combine Kim’s knowledge of the warehouse and Antrim’s cop expertise to pull off an epic heist. Using information from Kim, Antrim and a team of six others robbed the warehouse at 3 a.m. on October 29, 2018.

Their plan seemed foolproof – Kim had valuable information, from the warehouse’s layout to its security protocol. Antrim, accompanied by his team and dressed as an armed deputy, entered the warehouse with a phony search warrant. He “detained” the warehouse’s security staff and kept them in the back of a vehicle.

With their plan unfolding, Antrim’s group began to steal quite the stash: more than half a ton of marijuana, safes containing more than $600,000, and other valuable items. Their plan seemed to have worked, and they drove to a storage rental facility to hide their goods, which they had planned to resell.

Busted!

Warehouses like the one in this story must have extensive video surveillance according to state regulations. Video cameras picked up the license plate number on the truck used to transport the stolen stash, and an attorney for the warehouse gave the footage to the local sheriff’s department. Kim and Antrim were totally screwed, as detectives quickly solved the crime.

Kim was sentenced to 168 months in prison – that’s a whopping FOURTEEN YEARS.

“Although not physically present during the robbery…Kim was integral to its planning, success, and profitability,” prosecutors wrote. “He was a leader, organizer, and knowingly made this robbery possible.”

Meanwhile, Antrim plead guilty to five felonies and is awaiting sentencing. With Kim receiving such a long sentence, we can’t imagine Antrim is in for a short stay behind bars.

The lesson here is, don’t try to recreate the plot to a big-budget action movie, because in real life, actions have consequences.
